Is your once-mighty office chair feeling a little wobbly? Has the trusty starbase finally cracked or given way? Before you banish it to the break room abyss, consider a repair! In most cases, a broken starbase is a fixable problem, and Jobel's here to guide you through the process.
Tools You'll Need:
Screwdriver (flathead)
Rubber mallet (or a regular hammer with a rag buffer)
Replacement starbase (if necessary)
WD-40 (optional)
Step 1: Assess the Damage
First things first, flip your chair over and take a good look at the starbase. Is there a visible crack? Are any of the caster holes broken? If the damage is minor, you might be able to reinforce it. For major cracks or shattered sections, a replacement base is the best option.
Step 2: Remove the Casters
Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry beneath the caster. You might need a little wiggling to break the initial friction. Tip: If the casters are stubborn, a spritz of WD-40 can help loosen things up.
Step 3: Detach the Starbase (if replacing)
Here's where things get a little tricky. The starbase is usually secured to the gas lift (the pole that adjusts the chair height) by friction. Flip the chair upright again and have a friend help you support the seat. You'll need to gently tap the gas lift cylinder upwards with the rubber mallet. Caution: Don't use a metal hammer directly on the gas lift, or you could damage it!
Step 4: Replace or Reinforce
If you're replacing the base, simply line up the holes and push the new base firmly onto the gas lift until it clicks into place. Pop the casters back in, and your chair should be good as new!
Make sure the chosen fix is rated for the weight the chair will hold.
Safety First!
Always prioritize safety when working on furniture. If you're unsure about your ability to repair the chair safely, or if the damage seems extensive, it's best to invest in a new chair.
